When the Client Knows the Trade

You can tell pretty quickly when you're working for someone in the trade.

They don't say much at the start.

No long brief, no over-explaining. Just a look, maybe a couple of questions, and then they step back and watch how you move. A carpenter and a builder — they've seen enough work to know where this is going within the first hour.

This one was for both.

The kind of job where the fence isn't just a boundary — it's part of the build. It has to sit right, look right, hold up next to everything else that's been done properly.

No hiding.

You feel that.

Not pressure exactly — just an understanding that shortcuts don't belong here.

So you slow it down where it matters. Cuts clean and tight, not rushed. Rails set properly, lines running straight without fighting them into place. Screws driven in clean — no stripping, no overdriving, no mess left behind. Everything seated the way it should be.

Palings go on one by one, and you pay attention. Spacing consistent, tops running true, no wandering lines. The kind of detail most people won't consciously notice — but the kind of thing a carpenter will pick up instantly.

There's a rhythm to it, like any job. But this one feels a little sharper. More deliberate. You're not just building it to stand — you're building it to be looked at.

And they do look.

Not hovering, not getting in the way. Just the occasional glance. A pause. You can feel them checking the details without saying a word.

That's how trades talk sometimes.

You get to the end of it — everything lined up, fixed off, cleaned up — and there's a moment. They walk it. Run an eye over the cuts, the fixings, the way it all comes together.

A nod. Maybe a quiet “that's good.”

And that's it.

No big speech. No over-the-top reaction.

But you know what it means.

Because when someone who does this for a living notices the small things — the screws sitting right, the cuts landing clean, the palings running straight — that's the approval that counts.

Anyone can say a fence looks good.

But not everyone knows why it does.
