Children's Playground Fencing & Gates

Safe, compliant fencing and child-proof gate systems for schools, childcare centres, and residential play areas across Melbourne. Built to Australian Standards — because children's safety isn't a corner to cut.

A fence around a children's play area has one job above all others: keeping children safe. That means the right height, the right panel spacing, the right gate hardware, and no climbable surfaces within reach. It also means building something that actually gets used correctly — gates that latch every time, hardware that adults can operate easily but children can't.

We build playground and play area fencing for schools, childcare centres, kindergartens, and residential properties across Melbourne. Every installation is designed with current Australian Standards in mind, and we provide the documentation that schools, councils, and insurers require.

For residential clients, we bring the same level of care to backyard play area fencing — because the standard you need at home is the same one you'd expect at a professional facility.

A gate that doesn't self-latch, a fence panel a child can climb, or a gap wide enough to squeeze through — these aren't minor details. We don't treat them as such.

What We Build

Playground and play area fencing solutions for every setting.

Playground Perimeter Fencing

Full perimeter fencing for school playgrounds, childcare centres, and residential play areas. Keeps children safely contained while maintaining sightlines for supervision.

Child-Safe Gate Systems

Self-closing, self-latching gates with child-proof hardware positioned out of reach. Designed to prevent small children from wandering while remaining easily operable by adults.

Compliant Pool & Play Area Fencing

Pool fencing that doubles as play area containment, built to Australian Standard AS 1926.1. Non-climbable zones, correct panel spacing, and compliant gate hardware throughout.

School & Childcare Fencing

High-spec perimeter fencing for schools, kindergartens, and childcare centres. We work within council and regulatory frameworks and provide all required documentation.

Safety Audits & Upgrades

Existing playground fencing not meeting current standards? We assess and upgrade — replacing non-compliant panels, hardware, and gates to bring the site up to code.

Residential Play Area Fencing

Backyard play area fencing and gating for families. Keep the trampoline, swing set, or pool zone safely contained without compromising the look of your garden.

Where We Work

Gate Safety

Child-Safe Gates That Actually Work

The gate is the most critical part of any playground or pool fence. A fence can be perfect in every other way — but if the gate doesn't latch, or a child can reach the release, or the hinge sags over time, the entire system fails.

We install self-closing spring hinges that return the gate to the latched position from any angle of opening. We set latches on the inside face at the correct height — out of a child's reach, but operable by adults without keys or special tools. And we use hardware that's rated for outdoor use and won't corrode and jam within two seasons.

For high-traffic settings like schools and childcare centres, we specify heavy-duty hardware that holds up to hundreds of uses per day — because a self-latching gate that stops self-latching after six months is not a safe gate.

Self-Closing Spring Hinges — Adjustable tension hinges that close the gate from any position — including when adults leave it ajar. Rated for outdoor use and thousands of cycles.
Self-Latching Mechanism — The gate latches automatically on closing. No manual step required. Hardware positioned on the pool or play side at adult height.
Child-Proof Latch Position — Latch set at a minimum 1500mm on the inside face, or using a child-proof double-action release that requires deliberate adult-level coordination to open.
No Climb Zone at Gate — The gate frame, hinges, and surrounding fence are designed with no footholds or handholds in the lower 900mm that a child could use to scale the gate.
Double-Gate Options — For vehicle or equipment access, double gates are fitted with a drop bolt to ground and a centre meeting post to ensure both leaves close and latch correctly.

Australian Standard Compliance

Pool and play area fencing in Australia is governed by AS 1926.1. Here's what that means in practice — and how we meet it.

Gate self-closing & self-latching

All gates must close and latch automatically from any position. We install compliant spring hinges and self-latching mechanisms as standard.

Latch positioned out of children's reach

Gate latches must be positioned on the pool/play side at a minimum height, or be child-proof. We advise on the correct positioning for each installation.

Non-climbable zone (NCZ)

A 900mm non-climbable zone must be maintained on the outside of the fence. No horizontal rails, furniture, or structures within this zone that a child could use to climb.

Panel opening size

Gaps between vertical rails must not allow a 100mm sphere to pass through — preventing children from squeezing through or getting trapped.

Minimum fence height

Pool and play area fences must be a minimum 1200mm in height. We build to this as a minimum, with taller options for added security.

No footholds below 900mm

The lower section of the fence must provide no footholds that could assist climbing. We design our panels accordingly.

Common Questions

What Australian Standard applies to playground and pool fencing?

AS 1926.1-2012 (Safety barriers for swimming pools) covers pool fencing and is commonly applied to play area containment fencing as well. For school and childcare settings, additional guidelines from the relevant education authority and building code also apply.

Does a backyard play area need the same fencing standard as a pool?

If your play area includes a pool, yes — AS 1926.1 applies. For non-pool play areas, there is no single mandatory standard for residential properties, but we recommend building to pool fence standard for any area designed to contain young children. It's the benchmark that makes sense.

Can you fence an existing school playground to current standards?

Yes. We assess the existing fence, identify non-compliant elements — typically gate hardware, climbable sections, or inadequate height — and provide a scope of upgrades. We can work school holiday periods to avoid disruption.

What's the minimum height for a playground fence?

Under AS 1926.1, the minimum height for a child-containment fence is 1200mm. For school perimeter fencing, higher specifications are typically required. We advise based on the specific application and any relevant council or educational authority requirements.

Do you provide compliance documentation?

Yes. For commercial and institutional settings, we provide written confirmation that the installation meets the relevant Australian Standard, including a description of the hardware used. This is typically required by insurers, councils, and accreditation bodies.

How do I arrange a quote for playground fencing?

Call us or submit a request through the website. We'll visit the site, assess the scope, and provide a written itemised quote. For school and childcare jobs, we're happy to liaise directly with the business owner, principal, or facilities manager.
